Frank House - circa 1940
Anne Frank House - Amsterdam

Without question, the most memorable part of my stay in Amsterdam was an (unplanned) visit to the Anne Frank House, where Anne wrote her now famous diary. I won't go into detail, but here's a link for those who are interested in learning more.

(Give it time - it's worth the wait!)
The Anne Frank House

I had tears in my eyes at times as I made my way through that house.  A more poignant reminder of "man's" inhumanity to mankind, as well as the compassion and indominable spirit of which the species is capable, is difficult to imagine.  When you get to Amsterdam, if you do nothing else, don't miss this.

Uncharacteristically, I did visit a few of Amsterdam's 183 museums and art galleries, including the Van Gogh.  The one "attraction" I didn't visit, but wish I had, was the Museum of Sex.  I walked by it, on a very busy street (Damrak), and concluded it must be very tacky.  It wasn't until I returned home that two friends (mother and daughter) said they'd gone into it and thought it was an absolute hoot!  Oh well, next time!

The hotel I stayed in - Hotel Pulitzer - is really quite unique. It's fashioned out of 25 restored 17th and 18th century canal houses along the Prinsengracht canal, only a few minutes walk from the Anne Frank House. My photos hardly do it justice, but anytime you're in Amsterdam and want to spoil yourself (if money's a concern, make sure someone else is paying!) I can certainly recommend room 585 at the Hotel Pulitzer.  It's even featured in their brochure!  Tell Eveline (Korte) I sent you - we may both get a discount!!

Well, thanks for the visit, and if this page has piqued your interest in Amsterdam, here are a few links through which you can explore the city from the comfort of your armchair. (But I highly recommend a visit!). Enjoy!
